Raising flexible finance to support Azuri Technologies to grow its solar business in Kenya

The Business
Azuri Technologies is a global leading player in the pay-as-you-go solar technology market, combining solar and mobile payment innovation to make affordable, clean energy supply and modern household appliances such as TV, radio, mobile phone charging and lighting accessible to the millions in sub-Saharan Africa without access to conventional power.

Since 2012, Azuri has sold more than 220,000 solar home systems, positively impacting the lives of over 1million people through access to solar energy. The business has also created more than 5,000 new jobs across sub-Saharan Africa and provides equal opportunities for men and women.

Azuri has partnered with Energise Africa right from the beginning in 2017 as they recognised our ability to match them with retail investors to deliver the flexible low-cost finance that they needed within their funding mix. We have successfully worked together on more than 25 investment raises as well as partnering on events that help us spread the word about the success of our funding model.  An additional benefit that attracted Azuri to Energise Africa was the institutional investment we are able to deploy from our match-funding partners to blend alongside individual investors.

The Impact

  • Azuri has been a regular feature on the Energise Africa platform, with 26 successfully filled bond offers, the largest of these being for £1 million.
  • Overall, investors through Energise Africa have raised over 5.7 million, giving Azuri the up-front funding to produce and deliver solar home kits to more than 40,000 off-grid homes.
  • Our community of investors filled the Azuri offers time and again, being offered targeted annual returns of 5% to 5.5%.
  • Over their 26 raises to date, we have matched £XXX of funding from UK aid into Azuri products, with many of the raises filling within one week of launch.

“Azuri has been delighted to work with Energise Africa and their community of UK-based retail investors to finance off-grid solar homes. With this innovative financing, thousands more households will be able to access modern solar energy for the first time.”
