A greener, more prosperous future for Nigeria

Bisedge is a market leader in green logistics in Nigeria. Since 2020, they have provided reliable material handling services to large companies in West Africa

Energise Africa is pleased to have helped the pioneering green logistics business, Bisedge, run seven previous successful investment raises, supporting the development of their business in Nigeria. Now, as they are more than halfway through their eighth bond offer with us, we wanted to take the opportunity to tell investors and potential investors a bit more about the incredible double impact on people and the planet that investments in Bisedge help to create.

Who is Bisedge?
Bisedge is a market leader in green logistics in Nigeria. Since 2020, they have provided reliable material handling services to large companies in West Africa. In a nutshell, what they offer is a fully outsourced electric forklift service that includes trained operators (a first of its kind service package in Nigeria).

Because of their unique offering, Bisedge is growing in size, and since launch, they have moved more than 5,000,000 pallets, offset more than 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, and worked with 6 leading blue chip companies in Africa. They have plans for greater growth and are at the stage where they need external investment to help them achieve it.

The twofold effect of your investment
Investments in the latest bond offer will allow Bisedge to grow its fleet of electric forklift vehicles, creating the double impact of cutting carbon emissions (investments in this offer will remove 620 tonnes of CO2 emissions in one year by providing 5 new electric forklift trucks) and creating secure jobs in the growing industrial sector in Nigeria.

A green solution for Nigerian industry
With the largest population of any of Africa’s countries, Nigeria is the continent’s second-biggest producer of greenhouse gases and has a major challenge ahead to meet its Paris Agreement pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030, (when compared to “business-as-usual” levels) and achieve net-zero by 2060.

Bisedge is a forward-thinking business that provides green logistics solutions for major African companies. By supporting large manufacturing, industrial and logistics companies to switch to new electric forklift trucks, the companies can cut diesel use by 55,000 litres per truck per year, and each truck will reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 124 tonnes annually. Since many of Bisedge's clients are large corporations with round-the-clock logistics departments, switching from diesel to electric forklifts can result in significant carbon savings.

Empowering women in the workplace
To support Nigeria’s economic prosperity, empowering more women to join the industrial workforce could have substantial benefits. While 45.5% of the Nigerian labour force is female (1). The majority of women work in farming, agriculture, or as traders, (2) and they are massively underrepresented in the industrial sector.

This is something that Bisedge is determined to change. They have set a target for women to make up 30% of their workforce, and to achieve that, they have launched the Female Operator Programme - a free training resource for Nigerian women with the offer of a guaranteed job at the end. For many women, this presents a life-changing opportunity to find secure employment in a growing sector with career prospects.

Deborah Akindolani initially felt lost after moving to Lagos from Ogun State, but met with another Bisedge operative who told her about the programme, she said:
“I felt encouraged that if she could do it, I can do it also, I begged her to please help me get the job and she actually did. She sent me the link to register for the free training.”

During the phone interview, Deborah was nervous that her being a mother to young children would be a problem, but was over the moon to be told that having children would never hold her back at Bisedge. She is now proud to be employed as a forklift operator at Bisedge.

“I started the training and for the fact that I have never driven anything, it wasn't easy, but here we are today… I can stack, I can offload and load a truck, I can change batteries at times. Thank you Bisedge for the opportunity!”

Beyond just employing more women, Bisedge is also dedicated to helping more women thrive and progress in their careers. By supporting female staff in career developmen , many of Bisedge’s female staff members have progressed from operator roles to more senior positions, such as site leads and cluster leads.

One such employee is Bukes Saliu, who started as a forklift operator with Bisedge and impressed with her skill and attention to detail. Bukes, a single mother, was promoted to the role of Site Team Lead, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the site, and managing a team of operators. After two months, she was prompted again to Site Team Lead, then Site Supervisor.
Bukes says:
“Bisedge Logistics and Infrastructure has provided me and other women with a space to thrive, I have personally benefited from this inclusive environment and has brought out the best in me as I keep growing and I do not take it for granted.”
