Powering Homes Across DR Congo with Clean, Reliable Energy

Across the Democratic Republic of Congo, millions of people still rely on kerosene lamps and other costly, polluting alternatives for their most basic energy needs.

Bboxx RDC has spent eight years tackling this directly, installing more than 66,000 solar home systems across the country. Now, through a new partnership with IFOD, a deposit-taking microfinance institution established by the DRC's National Episcopal Conference (CENCO), Bboxx is set to reach a further 20,000 households over the next two years, by supplying solar home systems to teachers whose salaries are processed through IFOD's network.

About Bboxx RDC

  • Directors name(s): Mike Kalala (Managing Director)

  • Founded: 2017

  • FLocation: Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Sector: Solar Home Systems

  • Established in 2017 as part of the wider Bboxx Group's expansion into the DRC; the Group was founded in 2010 in the UK as one of the pioneering vertically integrated solar home systems companies focused on expanding energy access in emerging markets

  • Has installed more than 66,000 solar home systems across the DRC over eight years through direct-to-consumer sales. A related Bboxx Group entity, Bboxx Capital UK, was an early Energise Africa borrower, issuing and fully repaying seven bonds totalling approximately £2.25 million between 2018 and 2020

  • Has entered a new B2B partnership with IFOD to supply solar home systems to teachers across the DRC through IFOD's existing payroll network and plans to deploy more than 20,000 solar home systems under this partnership over a two-year period

What the Project Investment Will Enable

Funds raised through this bond will provide inventory financing for Bboxx RDC's partnership with IFOD, as part of a wider shift from direct-to-consumer sales towards a lower-risk, payroll-linked B2B model.

B£500,000 will enable Bboxx to install approximately 1,800 Flexx140 kits, each comprising a 140W solar panel, 32" TV, control unit, four light bulbs, radio and phone charger, delivering reliable lighting, phone charging and entertainment to teachers' households across the DRC. Under the IFOD contract, 40% of each order is paid upfront, with the remaining 60% paid once installation is confirmed and verified, a structure that gives Bboxx more predictable cash flow and removes the pay-as-you-go collection risk it previously carried under its direct-to-consumer model.

An order for the first 6,000 of the 20,000 units has already been placed, with the 40% deposit received. Bond repayment is structured as a single bullet repayment of capital at maturity (12 months from the issue date), with a single interest payment also due at 12 months. Bboxx may repay early without penalty after 6 months.
